In the Archerd Shell Collection, the
shells at right are identified as "Melapium lineatum (Lamarck,
1822). The specimens were collected at Port Alfred, South Africa in the early 1960s. The
shells are smooth on the outside, without ridging, and have a quite
flattened spire. The larger is 2.0 cm.
The Family taxon has been classified previously in vsrious suggested families; e.g., Olividae, Turbinellidae (subfamily Tudiclinae), and Melapiidae.
